The Devil's Bridge story explains a remarkable crossing through a bargain with a supernatural builder. In one familiar version, a woman throws bread across the bridge and her dog follows it, frustrating the Devil's claim to the first soul. This is folklore, with variations, rather than a historical explanation of the bridges' construction.

Llanarth has its own tradition of the Devil attempting to steal church bells. Marks on a gravestone became part of the explanation for his hurried escape.
