Aberystwyth North beach and promenade

Aberystwyth's North Beach and seafront is a focal point of the town and a favourite attraction for visitors and locals alike. The mile-long promenade is popular with walkers, joggers, skaters, roller-bladers, bikers - and those who just want to relax by the seaside.

Close to the town, the clean, dark sand and shingle beach has both Blue Flag and Seaside Awards.  As well as a programme aof entertainment at the bandstand, there are traditional seaside treats such as donkey rides, ice cream, fish and chips and amusements at the  Victorian Pier. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the summer months.

Aberystwyth Promenade

The main focus of the Promenade and seafront is Marine Terrace with its Victorian and Edwardian style architecture and hotels. The promenade also features a children's paddling pool and bandstand with music, choirs and other performances during the summer.

Constitution Hill lies at the quieter northern end of the Promenade and features a cliff railway with the largest camera obscura in the world. On clear days, the beach offers wonderful views of North Wales, including the peaks of the Llyn Peninsular and Snowdonia. You may also spot people ‘kicking the bar’ at the foot of the hill however, the origins of this tradition are unknown.

Built in 1864, Aberystwyth Pier’s was once some 242 metres in length but time and marine storms have seen it reduced to today’s 90 metres. From November to March, this pier is home to a starling roost and their extraordinary display flight or murmuration is stunning to watch.

Further round from the pier, the promenade winds around Aberystwyth University’s Old College and St Michael's Church, past the castle grounds and war memorial. An iconic landmark, the Old College, was originally built as an ornate, Gothic-style hotel in the 1870s but when this venture failed, the founders of the ‘university by the sea’ took the opportunity buy it via public subscription as the base for the institution.
